An Evolving Role in the Life of the Community

The role of Idylease has evolved over the course of its history. What has remained consistent is the property’s ability to adapt to the changing needs of the community it serves.

Idylease had already served for nearly two decades as a place of medical care and convalescence. The addition of a helicopter landing field extended that role beyond the walls of the building, providing a means of rapid transport when immediate medical care was required.

The field remains privately operated and continues in active use more than fifty years after its establishment.

Privately Operated: Its Use Donated for Time-Critical Emergency Response

Idylease Helistop is a privately operated, restricted-use facility whose use is donated for time-critical emergency response, including medical evacuation (medevac) and permitted police, fire, rescue and forest-fire support operations.

MEDICAL TRANSPORT // REGIONAL RESPONSE

When Time and Distance Matter

The landing field is used in real-time medical emergencies requiring immediate care and rapid transfer to regional trauma and specialty-care centers.

Flights associated with Idylease have supported patients following serious motor-vehicle accidents, burn injuries, cardiac emergencies and other time-critical medical events.

Aviation Support for the Surrounding Forests

The landing field has also been designated by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service as a mobile refueling point for rotary-wing aircraft, extending the role of 1NJ6 beyond medical transport to wildfire-response support.

That use creates a direct connection between the airfield and the stewardship of the surrounding Idylease Tree Farm woodland.

The Jungle Habitat Connection

1972WARNER BROS. JUNGLE HABITAT
Idylease Helistop logo

Warner Bros. Jungle Habitat was a wildlife theme park in West Milford that opened in the summer of 1972. The park contained more than 1,500 animals and combined a drive-through safari with a walk-through area known as Jungle Junction, which included a reptile house.

Among the reptile-house demonstrations were live presentations involving highly venomous snakes. Park management faced an unusual medical contingency: a handler was allergic to the antivenom that ordinarily would have been administered following a bite.

Warner Bros. contacted local physician Dr. Arthur Zampella. Together they began the process of establishing a helicopter landing field at Idylease so that, in the event of a bite, the handler could be transferred rapidly to a medical center capable of providing alternative treatment.

The resulting emergency plan led to the establishment of Idylease Helistop in 1972. The facility entered the federal aviation record as 1NJ6 with an activation date of March 1973.

Jungle Habitat closed in 1976. The landing field remained.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Maintaining 1NJ6

Richard Zampella serves as Facility Manager of Idylease Helistop, continuing the stewardship of the privately operated landing field established by his father, Dr. Arthur Zampella, in 1972.

Maintaining 1NJ6 is an ongoing responsibility. Each year, the landing field and surrounding areas require trimming, vegetation control and routine maintenance, along with the inspection and upkeep of aviation support equipment such as field markers and the windsock.

The work is routine but necessary: keeping the field clear, identifiable and ready for use when time-critical operations require access.

The work is part of the larger stewardship of Idylease today: preservation of the historic landmark, conservation of the forest, and continued flight operations from the airfield.
